Scripture Diagramming™

Scripture Diagramming is a fun technique I came up with to help me break down verses and get better clarification and understanding of them.

If you remember diagramming sentences in school, it's based on that, but not as confusing, ha!

It's similar to using Blue Letter Bible, but instead of just looking up the original meaning of the key words in the verse, we're going to do what I call "thesaura-size".  We're going to find all the synonyms we can for these words and write them down.

A great online, resource for this is Thesaurus.com

Here's what the worksheet looks like (you'll find a download below):

How It Works

So let's look at a sample verse to help you get started.  We're using Psalm 55:22,

"Cast your burden on the Lord and He will sustain you."

As you can see above (and in a close-up below), the first thing you do is write your verse at the top of the page.

Now you follow the arrow prompts and fill in the circles with the key words in the verse.

Who is the verse about?

What are they doing or do they need to do?

With What?

To Whom?

What is the result?

You many not have a word for every circle, depending on the verse you're studying and that's ok.  The goal is just to break down the verse and focus on the meaning.

Once you have your key words, go to your thesaurus and look up all the synonyms for that word (or "thesaura-size" it )

Anytime the verse is about me as a believer, I fill in the synonyms with names that God calls me in the Word, which of course you won't find in the the Thesaurus, but you can usually find a good list by searching online for "who we are in Christ".

When the verse mentions the Lord, I first use Blue Letter Bible to see what original Greek or Hebrew word is used and then I look for other names of God that are similar to that one or that relate to the verse.

Once the worksheet is complete, take some time to meditate on the verse in this way.   If you're like me, you'll be amazed at the clarification it will bring and how the Lord will show you things you'd never seen before about the verse!

Your download is below and includes a full size copy of the sample sheet so  you can have a better idea of how it works.

I hope you have fun with this and if you have any questions let me know in the comments. :)

Today we're going to talk about using dingbat fonts in your journal.  If you're not familiar with dingbat fonts they are essentially a set of small pictures in font format.  So instead of letters when you press a key you'll get one of the shapes from the set.

You can find hundreds of free dingbat fonts available online at places like Dafont.  I'll link you to some of my favorites below.

The great thing about dingbats is that they can be resized to be much larger without losing quality which means you can create some fun and interesting designs for your art journal with them.

Installing and Using Dingbat Fonts

Installing fonts depends a lot on the system you're working on.  Here are the instructions for those on a windows based computer.

Be sure you trust the source before downloading free fonts.  The sources I'm recommending in class today are ones that I've used before and trust.

Once your dingbat font is downloaded, it will appear in the font list of whatever program you're using and it will be usable like any other font.  Just start typing to see what letters correspond to which images.

Some fonts will come with a printable list like below, showing which letters match which images, but if not, you can always make one yourself.

In case all of this is a bit too techy for you, I've created printables for all the projects today that you can use instead. :)

The first dingbat we'll be using today is one of my favorites.  Sewing Patterns by Lauren Ashpole.

Creating a Shaped Page

To create a shaped page, I enlarged the letter "S" in the Sewing Patterns font, chose white for the color and added a black 10 pixel stroke around it in photoshop.  Then I layered my quote over this.

I printed the shape on cardstock and sewed it to my journal page.  Next I cut around it to create the shaped page and finally colored in the spaces of the letters with prismacolor pencils.

I included a large and small shape in the printable below.  The small one will fit in the column of your journaling bible if you'd like to us it there!

Stained Glass Look

This font has lots of pretty stained glass windows.  (click on the image above to download)

Here I enlarged the letter "F" to get the dove image and then printed it on watercolor paper.

I painted it with with watercolors being careful not to touch the black ink so that it wouldn't run.  If you were concerned about this you could always go over the image with a waterproof pen before painting.

Finally, I sewed it to a transparency in my journal.

I sized these two windows below to fit the page of the journaling bible so if you wanted to you could use them to trace the image on your page and watercolor it or use colored pencils on it.

For this page I arranged the butterflies and heart from Miss Tiina's Doodlewhats font on the page and printed it on graph paper.  Then I added the text and color with sharpie pens.  (Be sure to have a piece of cardstock below your paper when coloring with sharpies to protect the surface beneath)

Making your own stickers is super simple with dingbat fonts.  Similar to the labels and tabs, just type your shape, print, color and cut!

You can print on sticker paper, and even cut them out with a Silhouette machine if you have them or you can go old school and just use scissors and glue stick!

Either way, you'll have tons of cute personalized stickers for your bible journaling!

Once I had my stickers printed, colored and cut out, I began arranging and layering them on my journaling bible page.

Next I added my scripture that I had printed on just plain printer paper.

I love this scripture.  It reminds of what faith art journaling is all about.  Writing it down so the next generation can praise the Lord. :)
