ten on tuesday - art and paper and the you-know-who

ten random thoughts on tuesday

one

Happy Earth Day!

Thank you Lord for this amazing place you created for us.  Please help us to be better stewards of it while bringing glory to Your name. amen.

I realize you are all probably tired of hearing about the dentist (thank you so much for your well-wishes and commiserating by the way) but I have one more visit this week that will involve "a little pressure" as the dentist likes to call it and some more heavy medication.  In the meantime I have a short:

Publicserviceannouncement

Floss your teeth people.   I'm just sayin'.  Floss.

three

Remember this post about the artwork I experimented with by one of my favorite artists Claudine Hellmuth

I really wanted to try and not be a big, gigantic goober about this, but it appears I have no control over that so I have to tell you that Claudine commented on my post!

Isn't that cool?  (I really hope she doesn't read this and realize what a goober I am)

Yesterday when I got home from the dentist and was feeling really yucky I got the best package in the mail from one of my bloggy friends.

It just couldn't have come at a better time and it makes me smile how God uses people in your life to do small, sweet things for you.

Paper_goodie_jenni_bowlin

The very generous package included a beautiful handmade card and was filled with goodies from another one of my all time favorite artists Jenni Bowlin.

What an incredible treat it was to open that package (which was wrapped in gingham ribbon!!) and see all those lovely, papery things.  Thank you so much Tammy!

It's been forever since I've done any impulse art so I thought I'd try it this morning with my new goodies.

I just love the scripture in Hebrews 4:12 that says,

"For the Word of God is alive and active and sharper than a double-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, joint and marrow and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart."

I am currently enamored with spelling numbers, graph paper, circus fonts, paper lanterns and of course flowers. You might notice some of those in my collage.

I really love the way numbers look when you spell them and it seems to help me memorize scripture references when I see the numbers spelled out.

Heartandsoulbutton

In case you were wondering I am still working on  the April edition of the HeART & Soul ezine.  It's a little delayed because of the visit to the you-know-who (trying not to mention it again) but it's going to be lots of fun, the theme is one of my favorites, Birdies!

nine

 Fitness on Friday

The you-know-who is getting blamed for this too. My lack of Fitness Friday fitness. *sigh*  Oh well, try again next week I guess (I did do the stair stepper twice last week though and drank lots of water for what it's worth).

My hubby brought me a big basket of red geraniums over the weekend.  I just love red geraniums.  Aren't they beautiful?

Red_geraniums

When I went to the quilt show I found this fantastic company, My Sampler, that sells embroidery kits that are so sweet.

They have one that I really want to do for my kitchen called, (what else?) Red Geraniums.

Actually, I want to do them all, especially the scripture ones, they are so cute!

Hey, that's ten already!  Be sure and comment on my giveaway post for a chance to win some goodies!

Hey! It's time for the Bloggy Giveaway again!  I'm being a tiny bit lazy and giving away the same prize as last giveaway but really it's mostly because I will be at the dentist twice this week and on lots of heavy medication so...technically it's incoherency and not laziness.

tuesday ten - mish mash

ten random thoughts on tuesday {wednesday is the new tuesday}

one

Guess what I'm working on?  My very own Bible Cover!  I found the directions to make my own pattern and let me tell you that was *the* hardest part so far.

There was much "wailing and gnashing of teeth" if you know what I mean.  I typically don't enjoy measuring and I have learned that sewing is *all about measuring*.

There are a lot of fractions. (1/4" seam anyone?)

There is measuring

There is actual math.

But I *still* love it!

Look how it looks so far!

Biblecover

More about this tomorrow and what I learned about ironing.

O-man is going to Austin on business at the end of the month and we all get to go!  Yippee!  We went last year with him as well and had such a good time.

Austin_elarroyos

We ate lots of yummy mexican food (my favorite - I could eat it every day - forever - I can feel my yankee husband rolling his eyes right now).

Austin_protest
...a protest!  Woo-hoo, a homeschool mama & daddy's dream day!

Austin_protest_flag

We even chatted with one of the organizers of the protest afterward about their views and why they were protesting.  She was very sweet and explained everything to Teen O (it was kinda over Little O's head) and then we had a family discussion about what we agreed and disagreed with.  The best kind of learning day.

Austin_flowering_cactus
Some pretty flowering cactus (cacti?).

Looking so forward to going to some antique-y, artsy places downtown this year! Hope the weather is better!

Teen O came in this morning while I was looking at etsy and asked me if he could have a pet hedgehog.  After talking to him about it for awhile, I turned back around to look at the screen and scrolled down and the next item was a painting of a hedgehog.  Weird, huh?

We got some pretty big bottles of bubbles in our Easter baskets around here and the other night we decided try blowing "night bubbles"...So we turned the back porch light on and were surprised by how pretty they were.

These were taken with the flash and the porch light to illuminate them.

When I turned the flash off I got this cool result:

Great conversations about light and capturing it ensued.  Gotta love impromptu homeschooling.

There was a very fun/funny game at Chuck E. Cheese the other day when we went for Little O's birthday.  It was a Mario Racing game and it had a little camera on it that snapped the picture of the boys and put them in the characters faces.  Look how cute:

I found a cool little tool to help me keep track of work time/computer time/school planning time etc.  It's called "Instant Boss" and you set up the time intervals that you want to work and take a break and little boss comes and yells at you when it's time to get back to work.  It's pretty funny.  It also tracks how much time you've spent working which is nice on some days when you feel you haven't accomplished much.

seven

Another great find is this meal planner from future girl. It's so cute the way it looks and it's set up *totally* the way I think.  I really love it.  Simple but exactly what I needed.  Her blog is pretty cool too - lots of free patterns and tutorials.  She is one talented, creative and crafty lady.

ten on tuesday -crafty & cakey & what can you do with old egg shells from Easter?

It's cupcake week on Martha Stewart!  Have you been watching?  So much yummy fun.  I think we should have cupcake week around here. Then I can make more of these.

My little guy is turning five tomorrow.  This hurts.  And also makes me feel a little crazy, because *yesterday* I was changing his diaper...yesterday people!

And I don't really want him to stop calling me mama and kissing me every time he walks through the room and saying  "I yuv you" instead of "I love you".

But it will happen.  I know.

So I'll just treasure every moment and take a million pictures and blog every cute thing he says and does (even if you guys get sick of it...heh-heh)...and then I'll remember...and then I'll start it all over again with grand-children! yippee!

Since his birthday always falls right around Easter we tend to combine the two and he actually *loves* having an egg hunt at his birthday party.  He calls it his "easterbirthday".  So sweet.  So here's some snaps from the party we had on Sunday:

Watermelon_salsa

Remember the yummy salsa I told you about?  The unusual ingredient is watermelon!  I know it sounds gross, but I'm telling you it is soooooo good.  You have to try it!  The watermelon replaces the usual tomatoes.  Most people don't even realize this until they taste it.  Here is the recipe:

Watermelon Salsa

Ingredients:

3 cups chopped watermelon
1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
3-5 cloves garlic, finely minced
2 tablespoons lime juice
2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
1 tablespoon chopped green onion
2 tablespoons chopped jalapeño pepper (this is spicy, cut it to one if you are chicken)
1/2 teaspoon sea salt

Directions:

1. Combine all ingredients in a large glass bowl and chill for at least an hour.  The longer you let it sit in the fridge the yummier flavors taste together.

2. Serve in the hollowed shell of the watermelon to delight and confuse your guests!

A couple of hints:

-DO NOT rub your eyes after chopping up the jalepeno...you will be sorry if you do.

-You may want to put the chopped watermelon in a colander over a bowl for a half hour or so to let it drain a little bit because otherwise your salsa can be a little too "juicy".

I really don't like junk mail.  It's like people mailing trash to my house that I have to then sort and make decisions about.  Like I don't have enough to do.  Junk mail...yuck.  I am going to have to think of some crafty things to do with junk mail.  Here are some ideas to start: Junk Mail Gems

five

We made a fun craft with our leftover easter egg shells today.  Super easy too!  Pictures & a tutorial in the next post. (right after this one or maybe before by the time you read this...heh-heh) EDITED: It's here!

six

I'm teaching myself embroidery!  It's so fun and it seems to go along with my new love for fabric.  I found a really fun link that has lots of free vintage embroidery patterns!  So cool!

seven

Another fun link I wanted to share with you is this one-Free printables at Wondertime.  Fantastic fun for homeschoolers or even just preschool moms or scrapbookers or babysitters...you get the idea.

eight

Did you see my new button about subscribing to my RSS feed (over there on the right)?  I completely made that up. Just thought I should tell you.

I *do* think you'll feel more crafty after hanging out here though.  And the best way to hang out here of course is to subscribe to my feed.

I know I've told you about bloglines before (so cool).  But just in case some of you still aren't gettin' the whole RSS feed thing, I found a great video to help explain it.  It's by the same guys who did the Twitter video I showed you earlier, Common Craft (they're geniuses).

nine

My friend Janice at Everyday Education, wrote a really wonderful article a couple of days ago.  It's geared towards homeschooling parents, but really I think if you're a parent at all you will be blessed by this article.

The two lines that spoke to me the most were these:

"Remember that children don’t remember what you do; they remember how you made them feel."

"Understand that this season of life will be over before you know it. Don’t put off doing the fun things!"

Those two lines really speak to what I want this blog to be all about.  I'm always striving to have fun with my kids, to soak up every minute of my time with them and make sweet memories with them that they can carry into adulthood and their own parenthood.  I want to teach them how good God is and I want to share with you all the ways I figure out how to do this.

I'm actually working on a pretty big project related to this and in the mean time I hope that when you come and visit here you are inspired in some way to create things and have fun and celebrate with your children or even as a child yourself .

Go read the article, it will bless you.

Thanks for my three volunteers who played tag with me!  Here they are:

taggity-tag-tag-tag

As I mentioned in this post, I have been multitudinously (yes, I made that up) tagged by lots of lovely people (however I am a dork and said it was Quirky, but it was actually Fizz who tagged me for one of them).

I was going to try and do them all in one post, but um, I can't.  So here is the first one:

The five things tag from Marianna

The rules are:

1. The rules of the game get posted at the beginning.
2. Each player answers the questions about themselves.
3. At the end of the post, the player then tags 5 people and posts their names, then goes to their blogs and leaves them a comment, letting them know they’ve been tagged and asking them to read your blog.

And here’s the meme:

What I was doing 10 years ago:

Ten years ago I was planning my wedding to the most wonderful man I had ever met.  The funny thing is I had *no* idea how happy I would be.  None.  I was kinda scared actually, but had really prayed about it and felt it was right  (and also the pretty dress and flowers and fun party helped to distract me...heh-heh).

Wedding_kiss1_2

Five things on my To Do List today:

1) Work on a puppet theater out of a cereal box idea with Little O
2) Call family about birthday plans for Little O
3) Look up chocolate cheesecake recipe which, yes, my four year old requested for his birthday
4) Post this tag post
5) Buy party stuff

Chocolatecheesecake

Snacks I enjoy:

1) Fruit (really, I do)
2) Chips & Salsa  (I have a recipe for salsa that has a completely unexpected ingredient in it, but is *so* good - I'll share next week)
3) Chocolate (is that a snack really?  Little O is always asking me that, "Mama is cake healfy for you or a tweat?")

Things I would do if I were a billionaire:

This could be long.

Of course the usual answers, travel, help my family etc.

But the thing that would be the most fun is that every time I heard of a need I would do something about it. Sick children who need medical care, orphanages that need blankets and toys, single mamas that need help with Christmas money...you know the stuff you read about and pray about but usually can't do anything about yourself .

That's what I would spend all my time and money doing (anonymously too so I could stand around and watch their reactions without anyone knowing.)

Can you imagine sitting in a little church somewhere that is having trouble making ends meet and putting say 150,000 dollars in the offering basket?

Or buying a struggling family a new house and mailing them the keys and the deed.  Or paying for every hopeful adoptive parent you meet to adopt a child from Ukraine or China or Africa?

I think if I was a billionaire I just wouldn't be one for long, because I would constantly be giving it away.

My accountant would hate me.

Accountant

Three of my bad habits:

1) Interrupting people (go ahead try to say something...)
2) Procrastination
3) Is *not* exercising a habit?

Procrastination_2

Five places I have lived:

1) Texas of course
2) Oregon (loved it)
3) South Africa (one of the best times of my life)
4) Arkansas (don't remember it)
5) Mississippi (don't remember much except some kind of spelling/pee-pee joke that I thought was very funny:

1st Kid: Can you spell Mississippi?
2nd Unsuspecting kid: M-i-s-s-i-p-p...
1st Kid: you pee pee?  wahhh-hhahaah-hahaa

...what? I was in second grade)

Five jobs I’ve had:

1) Preschool Teacher (fun)
2) Preschool Director (not fun)
3) Cake Decorator/Instructor (fun)
4) Wench at Medieval Times, yes that's right Wench (sooo not fun and an embarrassing costume)
5) Scrapbook Designer/Writer/Instructor (super duper fun)
6) Mama
(really fun and the most rewarding thing I have ever done in my life)

And I really have to run now, busy, busy weekend, so could five of you volunteer to do this tag?? Please?  I really want to tag all of you so I can hear your answers!

Leave me a comment if you're going to do it and then I will post your links on Monday!

Have a fantastic weekend everyone!

ten on tuesday - 8

ten random thoughts on tuesday (night)

one

I have been tagged by three sweet friends!  Deanne, Marianna and Quirky.  I  just wanted to say thanks ladies and I am working on these!  There is so much to post and so little time!

two

Lemons_kitchen

We made Glazed Lemon Scones the other day.  Oh what fun! They were yummy too, only I think I flattened them out a little too much so they weren't quite as high as I think scones are supposed to be. I'd never baked scones before though, so I was pretty happy with the way they came out!  The lemon glaze was *dee-licous* I could just eat that with a spoon - yum!  I found the recipe in the most recent issue of Family Fun Magazine.

three

Here's the recipe and some visuals:  (you can also get the recipe here)

Ingredients:

Scones:
2 cups flour (I used cake flour and this made them very moist)
1/3 cup sugar
1 Tbsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
Finely grated zest of one lemon
3 Tbsps cold unsalted butter, cut into 1/4-inch pieces
1 cup heavy or whipping cream, plus a little for brushing
1 egg yolk, beaten slightly
1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Lemon Glaze:
1 cup powdered sugar
1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
1/2 tsp lemon extract
1 Tbsp melted butter
2 Tbsp heavy or whipping cream

1. Heat the oven to 400°. Grease a large, heavy baking sheet (preferably not a dark one) and set it aside.

2. Sift the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt into a large mixing bowl. Add the lemon zest and toss the mixture with your hands.

3. Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles fine crumbs.

4. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients. Pour in the cream, the yolk, and the vanilla extract and use a fork to blend the liquids within the well. Then use a wooden spoon to combine all the ingredients, just until the dough holds together.

5. Scrape the dough onto a flour-dusted surface and then, using floured hands, knead it gently three or four times to form a ball. Flatten the ball into a disk about 3/4-inch thick, then cut it as you would a pie into 8 wedges. Transfer the pieces to the baking sheet, leaving at least 1/4 inch between them. Brush the tops lightly with cream.

6. Bake the scones in the center of the oven until golden brown, about 16 to 18 minutes. Allow them to cool on the sheet for a few minutes and then transfer them to a wire rack.

7. While the scones continue to cool, make the glaze. Combine all the ingredients in a small mixing bowl and whisk them until the mixture is smooth. If necessary, you can thin the glaze with water, stirring in no more than 1/2 teaspoon at a time. When the scones have cooled for another 10 minutes, drizzle each one generously with glaze. Makes 8 scones.

Squirrel

Okay, if you've been reading my blog for any amount of time you know that I have a squirrel thing (not like a "thing" for squirrels - that would be weird - a squirrel thing - click here to catch up).

Well yesterday when taking a peek at what people were searching for when they came across my blog I found the most hilarious search term ever.  Someone was looking for "squirrel bureaucracy".  I kid you not.

five

After I finished laughing I thought...what in the world were they looking for? What human being would want or need to know about squirrel bureaucracy?  I mean, actually, I thought I made that term up...you know?...I don't think there really *is* a squirrel bureaucracy..is there?...

Wait a minute...do squirrels get internet?  Maybe the *squirrels* were doing some research....

Congratulations to Lisa at The Scrap Princess Blog she won my prize at The Ultimate Blog Party! Look here to see what she won!

Speaking of prizes I won *two* prizes during the blog party.  How cool is that?

I won an Arbonne goodie bag from Stacey at The Truest Thing and some *fantastic* felt pins from Katrin at Cuteacious (you must go check her etsy shop, Kaleidoscope Style - so pretty). New bloggy friends and prizes!! What a blessing!

Quilt_show

The quilt show was fabulous.  amazing.  I really can't describe it with words.

I've always been a paper girl myself, but my mom has been wanting me to sew and a friend or two have encouraged me in that direction so that I was feeling kind of fabric-y already when my mom called and invited me to the quilt show.

nine

I am *so* glad I went. There was so much color and design and texture, everywhere I looked.  It was astonishingly inspiring!  Look at this!!!

My mom bought me fabric and goodies that I can't wait to show you tomorrow (plus more quilt show pics).  So much pretty!

I can't stop touching all the fabric.  Is this normal?

I never liked the term "fat quarters" before because...you know... it had the word "fat" in it ...heh-heh...but now I {heart} the words "fat quarters"!

Pink_red_fat_quarters

You know what they mean to me now?

"Here is some very expensive fabric that you cannot normally afford, but we are going to cut you a little, fat piece of it and only charge you $2.00!!  Now you can have some.  Aren't you happy?"

Yes! I am so happy!

My mom also got me a book on how to make fabric yo-yo's and ideas to use them *and* a heart-shaped yo-yo maker!!

I am so excited, I want to cover *everything* in heart-shaped yo-yos!!

But then

will I have to cut my fabric to do that?

Because I don't want to cut it.

I just want to touch it,

and hold it

and love it.

I have to go now, the fabric is in the other room and I can't reach it from here.

I'm editing my party post to add a little about me.  An idea I swiped  was inspired by over at Quirky's party!

You can find out what makes me a "one trick pony" by peeking in this room (just step around the giant pink pinata - that's for later - shhhh! - it's filled with chocolate and scrapbook paper).

To find out at about the prize I'm offering head over to my pink & red studio (oh don't I wish).  The prize will be similar (although not exactly) like these prizes!  Wa-hooo!

While you're in the studio you can see some of my scrappy, papery stuff by looking here, here and here.

If you want to know some random things about me including what I will make for you for $5.00 take a look in this room.

To really know my heart you can go over to my quiet corner and read the most favorite love letter I've *ever* received.  It's in the heart-shaped box next to my bible {swoon}.

{HINT: If you click on the play button a deep, handsome voice will read it out loud to you.}

If you're still hungry sneak into the kitchen and check out my pink chocolatey cuppy cakes! mmmmmm....there's a stack of recipe cards on the counter there, feel free to take one!

Well, I guess that's about it.  (don't look in that closet in the hall...it's just junk)  Thanks so much for coming to my party!!  I can't wait to come visit you at yours!  (so don't forget to leave a comment with your blog address, k?)

And on your way out be sure to pick up your party favor:

let us do good

A_card_for_loislg

I'm participating in a little "card drive" for a friend of a friend of a friend (you know how we internets are).

We're all making cards to encourage a fellow believer who is going through a difficult time right now. (to learn more click here)

If you like making cards and blessing people I know Wilna would love for you to participate.

And as an added bonus there will be a drawing with lots and lots of prizes being given away to all the participants.  (I'm giving away your choice of something from my etsty shop.)

So let's recap:

♥ friends
♥ crafty
♥ cards
♥ blessing
♥ prizes

Is there *any* reason not to head over there and drop Wilna an email saying you'd like to participate?

I think not. :)

If you need inspiration, Wilna has a gallery up of all the cards that have been made thus far!

Here's mine:

ten random thoughts on tuesday

one

Confused_clock

It's Daylight Savings Time again this Sunday.  I am not a fan.

two

Pencils

I know that there are *thousands* of pencils in this house.  I would really like to know where they are.

When I need a pencil I look in the pencil drawer.

Empty.

Except one small chewed up one with no eraser which is only still there because no one wants to use it.

I look on our supply shelf in the hall where we keep all the school supplies.

Empty.

Except for a green one that is really a watercolor pencil from my scrapbook stuff. (so *that's* where that went)

I decide to use it anyway and guess what?  No lead.

In desperation I go to the extra supply drawer with the bulk packages of items I get at the beginning of the school year when everything is on sale.

Empty.

Wha...?

Where are all the pencils???

really.  where are they?

Maybe this lady has them.

three

For those of you wondering what ever happened with the angry Fedex guys.  Um...nothing.  Can you believe it?  Hubby's coworker called and was transfered from department to department all denying knowledge of and/or responsibility for said Fedex guys,

{oh, that's not my department, let me transfer you}

until finally someone took his name and number and said they'd be sure to get back to him and guess what?

That's right. Nothin'.

So be careful if you're in Texas and see a Fedex truck because there are two very angry Fedex guys driving around who now know they can commit road rage without penalty.

Vote_aqui Vote_2

I voted in the Texas primary today!  One of the requests I had on my last contest was that I would discuss my political views.  I might do that, but they may be a little controversial.  So I'm still thinking about it.

I really don't like it when I'm reading the comments on someone's blog and one of the commentors commenters people leaving a comment, says something really funny and clever and seems like such a neat person and I mouse over their name and *no blog*!  *Ugh*  If you are funny and clever you need to have a blog. I want to read more about you and remember? I want to see your living room!

Snow

Guess what I saw out my kitchen window last night?  Snow!!!

Snowing

Already gone today though. *sigh*

I saw Claudine Helmuth on Martha today and it was like one of my *friends* was on Martha! Isn't that silly?  I don't know her personally of course (although I think we might have taught at some of the same conventions) but I *love*love*love* her books and read her blog.  She showed Martha how to make her little "sitting pretty" dolls.  I can't wait to try this!

I got this book from Paperback Swap yesterday!  (it's been on my list for two years!)  I love it so far! So full of fun stuff and creative ideas.

I found this cool 'sound' dictionary.  You type in the word you want pronounced and it says it for you!  Love that.

ten

Hottamales

I am eating these right now.  Not really good for you.  Pretty much corn syrup and pepper.  I just get this weird craving for them sometimes.  And they are so cinnamon-y and spicy and sweet.  Is there a fruit that tastes like Hot Tamales?  Maybe I could munch on that instead.

Grace and Peace to you,

M~

"It happens so regularly that it's predictable. The moment I decide to do good, sin is there to trip me up. I truly delight in God's commands, but it's pretty obvious that not all of me joins in that delight. Parts of me covertly rebel, and just when I least expect it, they take charge."
